Jon Contino: Illustrator/Typographer

Jon Contino work collage

I stumbled across Jon’s unique work while strolling through FFFFOUND! It caught my eye primarily because of implied age, his typography-based illustrations have the feel of branding from the 1800’s, but mix in a bit of modern aesthetic and sensibility.

Mostly monochromatic, his portfolio is a huge divergence from the more modernistic, cluttered and sterile looks you can find today. Jon paves new ground in illustration, drawing heavily on historic, sometimes nautical, imagery but twisting it to fit his unique vision.

Once a founding member of Onetwentysix Design Studios, he and his partner Matt Gorton have since moved on to form CXXVI Clothing Co.

Pride flows through his work: pride in his country and pride in his city… New York. New York is evident in his illustrative style, bringing to mind summer baseball games and simpler times. His focus is on hand lettering from the city’s history and forms its own personality through implied imperfection.

“I would have very little style if it wasn’t for New York and all the incredible people that live and work here.”
